What’s New?

It’s a new season and the monarchs have arrived! You can stop in and see live samples of caterpillars, chrysalis & even adult monarchs throughout the summer at the storefront where we are located. Watch for the “Monarchs Today” sign posted outside to let you know when we have new adult monarchs drying their wings inside. We release them within 24 hours after they eclose, so don’t miss your opportunity to see them! Here’s the address:

The Minneapolis Monarch Festival Saturday Sept. 6 this year! Such a great event, make sure to put it on your schedule! It’s held at Lake Nokomis from 10:00-4:00 pm. Here’s a link to the event – Mpls Monarch Festival

• Plant milkweed and nectar plants. Use local growing milkweed and include nectar plants, ideally having at least three species that bloom each season.

• Avoid pesticides and herbicides. Both kill caterpillars. If they must be used, choose the least toxic alternative and apply in spot treatments, rather than broadcast methods.

• Reduce mowing in ditches and along roadsides. In rural areas, consider scaling back, even 10% helps. If areas need to be mowed to keep down trees and brush, mow only after Oct. 1, when plants go into dormancy. The monarchs should by then have completed their cycle and be on their way to Mexico.

• Spread the word. Teach others about monarchs and their need for milkweed. Raise questions. Encourage public land managers to create monarch habitat and reduce mowing.

• Support monarch conservation programs that do good work. Consider donating your time or money to those you favor (hey, we'd be a good start!).
